Egypt Currency: Egyptian Pound.
The Egyptian pound is the Egypt Currency. A pound is divided into 100 piasters and 1000 millièmes. ISO code EGP.
The Arabic name is Guinea (Arabic جنيه dschunaih, DMG ǧunayh; pronounced ginēh in Egyptian Arabic). The common abbreviation of the Egyptian pound in Latin script is LE (also egypt £ and E£), from the French name livre égyptienne.
Distribution
The Egyptian pound is the official Egypt Currency. It is also used as an unofficial currency in the Gaza Strip alongside the official Israeli shekel there.
Cash: Coins
There are circulation coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 piasters and, since 2006, also in denominations of 25 piasters and 1 pound. The structure of the 1 pound coin is reminiscent of the 2 euro coin and has the motif of Tutankhamun. Cleopatra is depicted on the 50 piaster coin. The older version of the 25 piaster coin is a hole coin. The technical parameters of the 1 pound coin (with a market value of around 5 euro cents) make it possible to confuse it with the 2 euro coin.
The 1, 2, 5 and 10 millièmes as well as the 1 and 2 piaster coins are no longer valid.
Banknotes
Banknotes come in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 piasters and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pounds. Since money is transported in Egypt either as a simply folded bundle, often with a money clip, or in wallets without a coin compartment, coins play no role in everyday payment transactions, practically only banknotes circulate. There is also a shortage of banknotes in denominations under 20 pounds.
